Your Child’s First Dental Visit
We recommend establishing a dental home and scheduling the first visit by the time your child’s first tooth appears (or around eighteen months of age). This gives our team the opportunity to identify potential concerns early and recommend solutions before problems develop. We know dental offices can feel intimidating for young children, so we suggest parents bring their kids to their own cleaning appointments before the child’s first visit. This helps them see that visiting the dentist can be a positive, comfortable experience with nothing to fear.
For younger patients, we may recommend dental sealants or a fluoride rinse. Sealants are thin, protective coatings applied to the teeth—most often the back molars, as they are more likely to develop cavities. Fluoride rinses also help protect against decay while strengthening tooth enamel.
Age-Specific Dental Care
Family dentistry at Hamilton Dental serves patients from the youngest children to the oldest seniors. Different ages are more prone to certain dental problems. For young children, tooth decay is the most common concern, often due to higher sugar intake and developing oral care habits. Dental sealants can provide an added layer of protection for the teeth most vulnerable to decay.
The heart of children’s dentistry is education and prevention. We work to ensure our youngest patients have positive dental experiences so they grow up unafraid of the dentist and look forward to preventive checkups. As part of each child’s healthcare team, we look for opportunities to improve oral health, offering dietary and home care tips to reduce the risk of future dental issues.
As children grow, alignment concerns can appear. Drs. Hamilton can detect bite or smile issues early, before they become more serious. We also partner with experienced specialists, including orthodontists, pediatric dentists, and oral surgeons, when needed. Severe bite issues are often easier to correct while a child is still growing, which is why many orthodontists recommend a first consultation around age seven, after the first adult tooth comes in. Identifying conditions like extreme overbites or underbites early can allow correction with braces alone rather than surgery. Every smile is unique, making early detection essential for lifelong oral health.
Oral Health Changes
Our teeth change with age, just like the rest of our bodies. Over time, the outer enamel layer thins, revealing more of the off-white dentin beneath. Lifestyle habits such as smoking or frequent coffee consumption can add further staining. Professional teeth whitening can help restore a brighter smile by removing years of discoloration.
In the late teens and early twenties, wisdom teeth often make an appearance. Due to evolution, most mouths no longer have room for these extra molars, which can lead to crowding, crooked teeth, and other oral health concerns. In most cases, we recommend removing wisdom teeth, and we offer a variety of solutions for addressing misalignment as well.
As we age, the risk of missing teeth increases. Like staining, these issues develop gradually over time. Our office provides several tooth replacement options, including dental implants, bridges, and dentures. During a consultation, we’ll help determine the best treatment plan for your individual needs.
